The drugmaker Pfizer has said it would not be taking the drug because of concerns it may increase Viagra sales to a company it will never become involved in.

The move comes as a major health care issue for Pfizer, which lost patent protection in the first half of 2019 after the drugmaker announced it was moving its Viagra product to another generic rival.

It was the first time Pfizer had made such a decision, as it was the first company to make a drug in a generic form to rival Viagra.

In a filing to the Securities and Exchange Commission, the company said its U. S. patent, for the male impotence drug sildenafil citrate, would expire on April 30, 2020.

That date was also when Pfizer filed a notice of intent to sell sildenafil for erectile dysfunction in February 2020.

Viagra, which was already approved as an erectile dysfunction treatment, is Pfizer's most well-known brand drug.

It is one of the few drugs in the world with more than 25 million prescriptions filled, but the company said it could see it use up to 50% of the sales of Viagra to get new prescriptions.

Pfizer said it expected sales of Viagra to hit $1.9 billion by 2020 and $4.6 billion by 2029, and expects sales to exceed $8 billion by 2024 and $12 billion by 2029, respectively.

The company's patent for sildenafil citrate was due to expire on March 19, 2020. It said it was planning to file for a generic version of sildenafil at that time.

Pfizer said it is working with regulatory authorities to determine the fate of the drug after the expiration of Viagra's patent.

The company said it will take the product to another generic manufacturer and to Pfizer's own drugmaker, Dr. Reddy's.

Pfizer said that it had no plans to market the drug for more than three years and would not take Viagra.

It is not clear whether Pfizer will get involved in the licensing process of the drug or its own manufacturing process, but the company said its patent for the drug would still be valid until 2028.

The company said it would continue to market the drug in the U.

A spokeswoman for Pfizer said: "We continue to market the product and in the U. we will continue to do so.

"We believe that our product will be successful and that Pfizer will continue to market the product as the world's best-selling drug."

In a statement, Pfizer said: "This matter is complex and we continue to operate under the strictest standards of safety and regulatory compliance.

"Pfizer continues to manufacture, supply and sell the drug products.

"We have been manufacturing and supplying the Viagra product for more than a year.

"We will not be taking the product, including any other medication, for any future manufacturing, supply or manufacturing trips.

"The FDA is committed to protecting the health and safety of consumers and our pharmacists are encouraged to reach out to the FDA's Office of the Inspector General at (olicited). Please use the following to reach out to us and to request a review of your product.

"We appreciate your efforts to ensure that our patients receive the maximum benefit from our highly effective, FDA-approved medicines."
